5 Tips for a Professional Looking DIY Logo

When you start your business you will need a logo. This could be for your website, your work van or a business card. And while designers are worth their cost (I may be biased being a designer), you might not want to invest just yet.
In this article I am going to go over my top 5 tips for creating a premium looking logo. These are all things you can do yourself, using free software such as canva.
Here are my 5 tips for a professional looking logo
Have a mood board
Before starting your design make sure you put together a mood board of inspiration. This can be fonts, colours or icons that you like the look of. Try and stray away from logos that already exist as you might subconsciously end up copying one of them.Choose your brand assets
Have a few fonts and colours in mind before you start designing anything. This gives you more freedom to play around with layout and composition.Check out this article on brand guidelines to see what you need
Simple
Whilst you might think adding lots of design elements will make your logo look more professional, it can make it look amateur. Most professional logos are stripped back and simple. Think of your favourite shop, or brand. They tend to have a simple logo or a wordmark.Responsive
Ensuring your logo is viewable at all sizes will make it look more professional. In some instances you will need to create a condensed or simplified logo for small screens, and a regular or more detailed one for larges items. Here’s our responsive logo:

Monochrome
Finally make sure your logo also works in black and white. There will be many occasions where you need to use your logo in one flat colour, take invoices for example. So before finalising your new logo, check it works. Here’s our monochrome logo:
